GPT Pilot is an open-source AI coding project designed to act as a developer companion capable of building substantial application features rather than only completing individual lines of code. Its workflow explores how an LLM can plan implementation work, write code, debug problems, ask the developer for clarification or review, and iterate toward a working application.

The project served as core technology behind the Pythagora development experience and was built around the idea that AI could perform most routine implementation while a human developer remained responsible for oversight and the difficult remaining decisions. It supports CLI-based use and integrations with several model providers, and the repository includes examples and documentation around generating full applications.

The repository is no longer actively maintained and now carries an important security notice: malicious supply-chain code was present in the repository from August 2025 until June 11, 2026. Anyone who cloned and actually ran affected source during that period is advised by the maintainers to rotate credentials and investigate the machine for compromise, so historical versions should be treated with particular caution.
